where she went cover unveiled!!!!!
August 24th, 2010
I know I was scooped by Entertainment Weekly. But in case you didn’t catch it, here finally, here is the cover of WHERE SHE WENT:
And here are the two covers next to each other, so you can see how they look as a pair, which is the point. Mia, back from the dead. And fierce.
I know there is much to discuss. Why a girl? Why is she so pretty? What was the process like to get to this cover?
Well, I’m going to do a larger blog about this later in the month, including debuting the jacket copy, which has many clues into the story, but I don’t want to give that away now amidst the WHERE SHE WENT teaser tour, schedule is here. But I may even interview the designer to get her to tell you about the process.
Needless to say, I made it hard for Penguin. For one, we had these two different covers, the hardcover and paperback and I think we all decided pretty as the hardcover was, we had to continue off the paperback. When you read the book, you’ll see why. Adam’s story doesn’t really work with flowers and trees. As for why a girl? I made thing so hard for my publisher by a) not knowing I was doing a sequel when I wrote the first book and b) doing a sequel but switching character POVs. Bad me. So at first, I think we were all thinking boy and girl. And maybe Brooklyn Bridge (ohh, hint). But when you’re doing sequels, they need to look like parts of a set. Think Lisa McMann’s WAKE series. Or Suzanne Collins’s HUNGER GAMES. Or, those iconic red and black book covers, the ones about the girl in love with the sparkly vampire. So when they finally showed me the girl, it was like, yeah, of course. Because even though the story is very much Adam’s story, very much his own trajectory, what drives Adam’s story, so much of what’s happened to him, ultimately comes back to Mia. I mean the book is called WHERE SHE WENT. It’s what torments him. It’s what he finds out. Ohh, look, more hints. And this isn’t even a teaser tour.
Anyhow, after the Teaser Tour, I’ll post the jacket copy, which even has a brief snippet FROM THE BOOK.
As for why the girl is so pretty, it’s because people like pretty girls on book covers. Is the Mia in my mind a little more normal looking? Of course.
And yes, I know, April is a long way off. But we all have MOCKINGJAY to keep us warm! My pre-ordered copy is waiting for me at home. Another reason I can’t wait to go home!
And if you feel so inclined, go comment on the EW story. I don’t know if such things help but they can’t hurt and it’s good to have people debating the cover and the book in a big old public forum.
More to come. And next week, FALL BOOK ROUNDUP. FINALLY! (I think this all caps is a new thing for me. I’m feeling the caps!)
